Why Visit Van?

Van is home to Turkey's largest lake and the legacy of Tuşpa, the Urartian capital dating to the 9th century BC. The Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island, Muradiye Waterfall, the famous Van cats and generous Van breakfasts make it a distinctive travel destination.

Featured Places to Visit

1. Akdamar Island & Historic Church

Reached by a roughly 20-minute boat trip from Gevaş, the island holds the 10th-century Church of the Holy Cross, decorated with stone reliefs of biblical scenes.

2. Historic Van Castle (Tuşpa)

Built on a steep rock, the fortress offers Urartian royal cuneiform inscriptions, rock-cut tombs and sweeping lake views.

3. Muradiye Waterfall & Suspension Bridge

Around 80 km from central Van, a canyon and suspension bridge beside waters flowing from Mount Tendürek.

4. Van Cat House & Handicrafts

A conservation centre for seeing Van cats, famous for their different-coloured eyes, and workshops practising traditional niello silverwork.
